Happy New Year!  Mrs. Bedwell and I are excited about this second semester.  And yes, Mrs. Bedwell is back!  We will continue to work on our winter theme for another 2 weeks, before moving on to the multicultural theme of “Around the World in Thirty Days”.  Stay tuned for more details!  Thanks to all of the families who participated in the parent/teacher conferences either in person, or over the phone.   Your involvement in your child’s education makes an enormous difference.  Please remember that you are always welcome to visit or volunteer in the classroom.  Mrs. Bedwell and I look forward to continuing our work with you and your child in 2010, and please feel free to email or call us if you have any questions or concerns.

We are having a great time with our winter theme.  The students absolutely love the igloo tent that has been added to the dramatic play area.  We have even had a snowball battle!  Don’t forget that parent/teacher conferences begin tomorrow.  Please refer to your notice regarding your scheduled date and time.  Please look out for information in your student’s B.E.E. folder regarding our holiday party and pajama party to be held next week .

The class had a great discussion this morning about Veterans Day.  Some of the students shared that they have family members who served in the armed forces.  I think the students would agree that the best part of Veterans Day was the school parade.  Their eyes were as big as saucers when they heard the Langston Hughes High School drum line coming down our hallway.  They were also amazed to see the Color Guard from Martin Luther King, Jr. H.S.  We had a great time shaking our pom-pons as the Veterans proceeded down the hallway.   What a wonderful time learning about and honoring our Veterans!

We are having a great time with our farm theme.  The students are learning farm vocabulary and expanding their background knowledge, as we read books about life on a farm.  They are also enjoying our pretend farm that is set up in the dramatic play area.  We have fruits and vegetables that are found on a farm, a bale of hay, a horse, and farming tools.  We even have a scarecrow!  We have also been working on creating and extending ABAB and AABB patterns.  The students are anxious to see what will happen to our seeds that we placed in ziplock bags with wet paper towels today during our science activity.  Stay tuned!

Our class is having a great time learning nursery rhymes and fairy tales.   We have acted out the stories, retold them with the flannel board, and drawn pictures of our favorite parts.  We even cooked and ate porridge, after reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears.   We have also been working on patterns and sorting.  Ask your student to sort and create patterns with some of the things that you have at home.   Students can sort and create patterns with socks, buttons, beans and coins.  During our science activity today, we made a mini lava lamp, using a jar, water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and Alka Seltzer.  Please ask your student about the changes that we observed as we added the oil, food coloring and finally Alka Seltzer to the water.  Don’t forget to send your child to school with jackets and hats.  The weather is getting cooler, but we are still enjoying our daily outdoor time.

Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Bedwell’s class had a great time today at the fire station.  We toured the station, discussed fire safety, and even had an opportunity to get on the fire truck!  Please continue to discuss fire safety with your student, and practice how your family would handle a fire.  During our science activity today we made rubber balls.  Please look for the rubber ball recipe in the next classroom newsletter.   Literacy packs and books from the lending library will be sent home on Thursday.  Please take this opportunity to work with your student, and encourage their love of learning.   All literacy packs and books should be returned on Monday, in the same condition that you received it.  Don’t forget Friday, October 9th, is a teacher workday and students should not report to school.

Ms. Davis & Ms. Bedwell’s Pre-K class has gotten off to an exciting start!  We just finished a 6 week unit on the five senses, and are now moving on to nursery rhymes.  Nursery rhymes are an excellent way to teach vocabulary and prepare our students for reading.  We have also been working on shapes and colors.  Ask your students about the shapes and colors of street signs as you are driving or walking.  Sydney Smith and Nicoh Lloyd are our classroom Students of the Month for the month of September.  Thanks to all of the parents who have been participating in our monthly snack schedule, and to those who have made donations to our cooking activities.  Please continue to check back here for more classroom news.
